Plywood for Trailer & Van Floors

Which panel goes in an enclosed trailer, how it compares with apitong, what it weighs, and the two places a plywood floor actually fails.

01 — The job

A trailer floor is a wear surface that gets wet

It is easy to specify it like a floor. It is not one. A trailer deck is loaded on points — pallet corners, jack wheels, equipment feet. Loads are dragged across it, not walked over it. It flexes with the chassis, and it gets hosed out.

Which means two properties decide everything and neither of them is on a grade certificate: what the adhesive is, and what the top surface is made of. Get those right and a plywood floor lasts the trailer. Get them wrong and it delaminates in a season.

Point loads, not spread loads
A pallet corner concentrates a load into a few square inches. This is where a void in the core becomes a hole, and why a void-free birch core is doing real work rather than marketing.
Water from every direction
Wash-out from above, road spray from below, condensation overnight, and standing water at the door seal. Enclosed does not mean dry.
Abrasion, constantly
Loads are slid in and dragged out. A bare sanded face gives up quickly; a phenolic film is there precisely because it is harder than the wood under it.
02 — The real comparison

Plywood or apitong — it depends on the trailer

Most people arriving at this question are not choosing between two plywoods. They are choosing between plywood and apitong — the dense tropical hardwood, supplied as laminated boards, that has decked heavy trailers for decades.

We sell plywood, so take the following with that in mind: on an open flatbed carrying steel and taking forklift traffic, apitong is the incumbent for good reasons and we would not try to talk you out of it.

Apitong / keruing suits

  • Open flatbeds and drop decks

  • Trailers where the deck is replaced board by board

Birch plywood suits

  • Enclosed cargo trailers and box bodies
  • Van conversions, campers and service bodies
  • Any floor laid in full sheets rather than boards
  • Builds where the weight you add is weight you cannot carry

The honest split is that apitong is a wear board and plywood is a panel floor. One is replaced in strips as it wears; the other goes down as a sealed deck in an afternoon and comes up the same way. Neither is a substitute for the other on the trailer the other one suits.

03 — The specification

Three panels, and where each one belongs

All three are exterior (WBP) bond. That is not the variable — interior-bond plywood has no place in a vehicle at any thickness, because the difference is the adhesive itself and not a coating you can add later.

04 — Sheets and weight

What a floor comes to in sheets and pounds

Enclosed trailers are commonly floored in 18 mm — 0.709 inch, the closest Baltic birch runs to three quarters. Van conversions and light utility trailers are usually 12 mm, and 9 mm where every pound counts against payload.

Weight is calculated at 680 kg/m³, our working figure for birch. It is worth knowing before you commit: on an 8.5 x 24 trailer the difference between 18 mm and 12 mm is 170 lb of payload you either keep or spend on floor.

What is deliberately not here: a span or load table. How far the deck may span between crossmembers, and what it will carry, is a property of the trailer as much as of the panel — and on a semi-trailer it is an engineered component. We publish what the panel is and what it weighs. What it may span is a question for whoever designed the chassis, and any website that answers it for you in a table is guessing on your behalf.

05 — Failure

Floors fail at the edges, not in the middle

A phenolic film seals the face of the panel. It does nothing for the four edges you cut and the dozens of holes you drill, and that is where the water gets in. End grain draws moisture the way a wick does.

The failure has a shape to it. Swelling starts at a cut edge or around a fastener, travels along a ply line because that is the path of least resistance, and lifts the film from underneath — while the middle of the sheet is still perfect. Which is why a floor that looks fine can already be finished.

    Seal every cut edge

    Including the factory edge you trimmed to fit. Two coats of a compatible sealer before the sheet goes down, not after.

    Seal fastener holes

    And the ones you add later for tie-downs, e-track and equipment. A hole drilled in year three is the same hole as one drilled on day one.

  3. Step 3

    Let it drain and dry

    Water will get under the deck. What matters is whether it can leave. A floor bedded in sealant with nowhere to drain rots from below.

    Mind the 0.8 mm

    A 4x8 panel is nominally 48 inches wide and actually 48.031. In a trailer with a true 48 inch interior that whisker has to come off, and it is better to plan the cut than to discover it.

That last one comes from the panel being metric. Every Baltic format sits marginally over the imperial size it is named for — the arithmetic is on sizes & tolerances.

06 — Vans & campers

A lighter duty, the same moisture problem

A van floor carries a fraction of what a trailer deck does, so the temptation is interior-bond plywood — cheaper, and it lives indoors. It does not. The underside of a van floor is the outside of the vehicle, and condensation collects on that metal every cold night.

12 mm over the ribbed floor is the common choice, 9 mm where payload matters more than stiffness, and BB/BB rather than film-faced because the floor is getting vinyl or a coating on top anyway. Sanded birch takes an adhesive well and gives a flat substrate that does not telegraph.

Cargo and service vans
12 mm BB/BB exterior bond, sealed edges, over a vapour break. Rubber or vinyl on top.
Camper conversions
9–12 mm over insulation. Weight is the whole argument at this end — a 9 mm 4x8 sheet is 40.2 lb against 80.3 lb at 18 mm.

Trailer floors, asked plainly

What plywood is used for enclosed trailer flooring?
Exterior-bond plywood, and for a wear surface a film-faced panel. Birch plywood with a phenolic film and an anti-slip mesh back is the usual specification: the film takes the abrasion and sheds water, the mesh gives grip, and the birch core carries the load without voids. Interior-bond plywood does not belong in a trailer at any thickness.
What thickness plywood for a trailer floor?
Enclosed trailers are commonly floored in 18 mm, which is 0.709 inch and the closest Baltic birch runs to three quarters. Lighter utility trailers and van conversions are often 12 mm. The right figure depends on how far apart the crossmembers sit and what rolls across the deck, which is a question for whoever engineered the trailer, not for a website.
Is birch plywood better than apitong for trailer floors?
They are different products for different trailers. Apitong is a dense tropical hardwood supplied as laminated boards, and it is the incumbent on open decks that take forklift traffic. Birch plywood comes in full sheets and weighs less, which suits enclosed trailers, box bodies and van conversions where payload is the constraint. On a flatbed carrying steel, apitong is there for a reason.
How much does a trailer floor in birch plywood weigh?
At 680 kg per cubic metre, an 18 mm 4x8 sheet is 36.4 kg or 80.3 lb, and a 12 mm sheet is 24.3 kg or 53.6 lb. A 7 x 16 ft enclosed trailer floored in 18 mm comes to about 281 lb of panel, or 187 lb in 12 mm.
Does a 4x8 sheet fit a trailer with a 48 inch interior?
Not without a trim. A Baltic birch 4x8 panel is 1220 x 2440 mm, which is 48.031 x 96.063 inches, so it sits about 0.8 mm over four feet on the width and 1.6 mm over eight feet on the length. The mills round the metric dimension up deliberately, so the surplus is always yours to remove rather than yours to make up.
Do I need to seal the edges of a trailer floor?
Yes, and it is the single thing most often skipped. A plywood floor almost never fails in the middle of a sheet; it fails at a cut edge or a screw hole where water got into the end grain and stayed there. Seal every cut edge and every penetration, including the ones you make later for tie-downs.
What plywood should I use for a van conversion floor?
For a camper or cargo van, 12 mm birch over the ribbed metal floor is a common choice, and 9 mm where weight matters more than stiffness. Van floors are a much lighter duty than a trailer deck, but the moisture case is the same: condensation collects under a van floor, so an exterior bond is still the right call.
Can I use interior-grade plywood if the trailer is enclosed?
No. Enclosed does not mean dry. Trailers are washed out, they carry wet loads, they collect condensation overnight and they take standing water through the door seal. The difference between interior and exterior plywood is the adhesive, not a coating, and it is the joint that fails first when it is the wrong one.
