01 — The glue nobody talks about

Ask for interior bond, not exterior

Every glue line in the panel is something the beam has to get through. Interior-grade (MR) adhesive cuts cleanly and leaves a pale, even edge. Exterior phenolic resin is a tougher, darker bond: it chars harder at each ply, smokes more and leaves a banded edge where the glue lines sit.

So for laser work the exterior panel is the wrong panel, even though it is the more expensive one — a case where paying more gets you a worse result. Our 5x5 line is interior-bonded throughout, which is why laser shops end up on that format. Exterior bond has its place — trailer floors and formwork — just not under a beam.

Void-free core

A void under the beam means a sudden change in what the laser is burning through: a missed cut on the pass, scorch where it lingers, and on a router a blown-out edge. All-birch construction has nothing hollow to hit.

Consistent density

Feed rate and power settings that worked on the first sheet still work on the fiftieth. That is the difference between a nested run you can leave alone and one you have to watch.

Even thickness

Laser focus and router Z depth are both set once. Thickness that wanders across a sheet shows up as inconsistent kerf and as parts that will not release from the tabs.

02 — Grade

Patches and the beam

This is the one application where grade is a technical decision rather than a cosmetic one. A BB face carries sound wood patches — different grain direction, sometimes different density and moisture content from the surrounding veneer.

Engrave across one and it takes the beam differently: the depth changes, the tone changes, and the patch outline appears in the artwork. Nothing is wrong with the panel. It simply is not the grade for engraving.

Engraving or a visible cut face: B/BB. Through-cut parts that get painted, assembled or hidden: BB/BB is fine and costs less. The grades page sets out the rest of the ladder.

03 — Format & thickness

Matching the machine

Laser beds
Most bed sizes are well under a metre. A 5x5 panel breaks down into bed-sized blanks with less waste than a long sheet, and it is a two-hand lift rather than a two-person one.
Router tables
A 4x8 table wants a 4x8 sheet — nest the full bed, clamp once. Our exterior-bonded 4x8 suits routing, where the adhesive argument above does not apply.
3 mm
Model making, inlay, layered signage, packaging prototypes, puzzle stock.
6 mm
The volume laser thickness: boxes, fixtures, toys, display parts, jigs.
9 – 12 mm
Structural cut parts, templates, fixture plates and machine jigs.
04 — Supply

Consistency is the product

A cutting shop does not really buy plywood, it buys settings that keep working. That means the same mill and the same construction order after order — which is why we run a short, deep list instead of whatever happened to be cheap that month.

Steadiest lines
3 mm and 6 mm B/BB in 5x5, interior bond, sanded two sides. Held at Houston and Baltimore.
Emissions
CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI documentation on request — worth having on file if you cut in an enclosed shop or sell into California.
