Baltic Birch Plywood for Cabinet Manufacturing

What goes where
Frameless construction concentrates the load in the panel rather than in a face frame, so the carcase material is doing structural work. These are the specifications shops building this way settle on.

Drawer components are a separate calculation — see plywood for drawer boxes. Exact inch equivalents for every thickness above are in the thickness guide, and they matter here: 18 mm is 0.709", so a dado cut for 3/4" stock will be loose.
Tall cabinets need the long sheet
Worth saying plainly, because it decides your order: a 5x5 panel is 1525 mm, which is 60 inches. A base cabinet side at 34-1/2" comes off it comfortably. A full-height pantry or wardrobe side at 84 or 96 inches does not, and no amount of clever nesting changes that.
So most cabinet shops run both: 4x8 for tall components and full-height ends, 5x5 for base carcases, shelves, backs and drawer parts, where the square panel yields better.
Both count toward the same five-pack minimum, so ordering the two together costs nothing extra and usually saves a freight run.
Why the laminations sell the cabinet
With most cabinet-grade plywood the edge is a problem to be hidden: banded, filled, or turned inward so nobody sees the voids. With an all-birch void-free core it is the opposite — the fine, even laminations became a design signature, and clients now ask for them by name.
Practically that removes an operation. No banding line, no glue pot, no edge that eventually lifts on a wet surface. Sand and finish.
It also means edge quality is worth protecting. Score-cut the panel, keep blades sharp, and store packs flat — a chipped lamination on a visible edge cannot be filled invisibly.
The paperwork is not optional
Cabinets are a finished good made of composite wood panels, which puts them squarely inside the US formaldehyde emission rules — TSCA Title VI nationally, CARB Phase 2 in California. As the fabricator, you are the one who has to be able to produce the documentation, not your supplier.
Which means the panel you buy has to come with records you can hand over. We supply CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI documentation, certificates of origin, phytosanitary and fumigation certificates and mill reports on request. If you sell into California or to a national retailer, keep them on file per batch rather than chasing them during an audit.

- Can you still get Baltic birch plywood?
- Yes. Availability across the U.S. market has been less predictable than it once was, which is precisely why we hold stock in Houston and Baltimore rather than selling from a catalogue and quoting a lead time. Ask and you get today’s real position on the floor.
- What are the disadvantages of Baltic birch plywood?
- It costs more than domestic cabinet-grade plywood. It is metric, so 18 mm is 0.709 inch and will not fit tooling cut for 3/4. It is heavier — around 680 kg/m³ against roughly 500 for a softwood-core panel — which shows up in freight. Interior-bonded panels are not for damp locations. And colour varies between logs and mills, so a batch matched across a large job needs to be asked for.
- Is Baltic birch plywood worth it for cabinets?
- For frameless carcases, exposed edges and anything where hardware load goes into the panel, yes — the void-free core is doing structural work and the edge removes a banding operation. For painted face frames or hidden components it is money spent where nobody will see it; a cheaper panel does that job.
- What thickness plywood is used for kitchen cabinets?
